There are three species of wombat:

Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat

Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat

Bare-nosed Wombat

Click on this link to find out about Epping Forest National Park, the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat's home.

How do the three species of wombat differ?

The Bare-nosed Wombat has a bare pointed nose, shorter ears and coarser hair than the two hairy-nosed wombat species.

The hairy-nosed wombats have broad hairy muzzles, long ears and silky hair.

In some areas, Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat populations are plummeting as a result of ingesting non-native vegetation. For more information, see the Wombat Awareness Organisation website: www.wombatawareness.com

The Bare-nosed Wombat is generally coastal and highland in distribution. The hairy-nosed wombats are generally found in semi-arid areas.

See the distribution map for detailed information.
